Wiki Loves Africa : Contribute to the Pool of Photos from Africa!

So you love Africa. You love Uganda. You love Kenya. You love Rwanda. You’re into that bright kitenge cloth and kikoyi. You love the smell of rolex as you prepare to take a bite. Luwombo in groundnuts and beef usually makes you high! You pass by the daily roadside markets, the one in Kamwokya, Kibuli, Kansanga, Kibuye and other places and have bargained for a thing or two.

What is musibataayi? Kaloddo? Nsenene? Does the world know these things? How often do you find kindaazi or molokony on the internet? Google? Wikipedia? Do you know how to properly put on a gomesi or a kanzu?

Wiki Loves Africa!

This October to November, Wikimedia Commons is calling for contributions to their annual contest Wiki Loves Africa! The contest is in its second year and calls for media submissions ranging from photos, audio to videos about Africa on particular themes. The themes could range from  any universal, visually rich and culturally specific topic like markets, rites of passage, public art, cuisine, natural history, notable persons etc).

This year’s prizes include a Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.4.

The theme for 2015

This year, there are calls for submissions on “Cultural Fashion and Adornment”. In Uganda, this might look like a Mushanana, Kikoyi etc. The competition scope is: video, audio or photography that shows representations of cultural dress and fashion; specifically fashion that is defined by local cultural influences and determines cloth, styles, ways of wrapping and hanging, etc.

Use your creativity to capture what you believe is a raw and authentic look of culture where you are.

Adornment is also part of the theme, which means that media of culturally defined jewellery, make-up, hairstyles and headdresses, cloths, scarification and tattoos, woven materials, etc. can also be entered.

Timeline

The contest starts 1st October and ends on 30th November 2015.

How to Submit

Submit your media to Wikimedia. Please note you will need an account on Wikimedia first. The sign up process is simple so no worries.

At the heart of the contest is the urge to have more home based depictions of Africa. So share your images and you could be lucky and win!
